Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid in more than 60 countries to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters or exclusion from healthcare.

In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centres for malnourished children and offers mental health care.

​

Through longer term programmes, MSF treats patients with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, sleeping sickness and HIV/AIDS and provides medical and psychological care to marginalised groups such as street children.

​

Founded by doctors and journalists in 1971, MSF is now a worldwide movement with offices in 19 countries.

 

University of Nottingham Friends of Medécins sans Frontières (UoN FoMSF) is a newly formed university society set-up in 2009 by medical students whose aim is three-fold:

​

1. Raise awareness of MSF’s work and humanitarian issues

2. Fund raising for MSF.

3. Encourage students to consider working for organisations such as MSF.

 

Previously we have screened Oscar nominated documentaries based on the lives of MSF doctors ('Living in Emergency') and we have had informal talks given by doctors who have completed missions. Its a great way of getting involved with the organisation at an early stage and to gain insight into the hardships faced by doctors delivering medical care in places that need it most.
